Beauty and Make-up Brushes and Tools for Women - What Every Woman Should Have

Women are notorious for looking great and glam...all the time! Here's a list of beauty and make-up tools for that great glammed-up look that you want.

Make-up Brushes
  • The Mascara. The mascara brush is used to curl up your lashes and make your eyes shine brighter than usual. To avoid clumping, wipe the wand with tissue before using. Then place it under your lashes, near the roots, and gently brush through. You could also use it to straighten out unruly brows.
  • The Lip Brush. The nice thing about using a lip brush is that you can save about 20 more applications with your lippie. It also helps blend the color of your lippie more thoroughly. Start at lining the outer corners of your lip first, then fill in the middle area.
  • The Powder/ Bronzer Brush. This double-duty brush is used to set the canvass for your face, to dust some bronzer or loose powder off, and to create an even make-up finish. When dusting, make sure to strike downwards to prevent powder particles from getting trapped under the facial hair.
  • The Blush Brush. Use a soft-bristled rounded-tip blush brush to make application easier. Blush in small, circular motions. Do not strike down or up. Streakes make blushing look unnatural. Tone down the blushing with translucent powder.
  • The Eye Shadow Brush. Blend hues on the lids, creases and outer corners of your eyes with an eye shadow brush for a more dramatic look. Before applying any hue, raise your eyebrows to lift the eyes and define the socket lines.
  • The Eyeliner Brush. Highlight your eyes with an eyeliner brush. Also perfect for a cat's eye illusion, the eyeliner brush may be used to make your eyes look wider, longer, higher or lower than usual. Draw tiny dots along the lash line and then connect them for a cleaner finish.
Hair Brushes
  • The Round Brush. You can go curly, or bounce some volume with your hair with a round-barrel brush.
  • The Fine-Toothed Comb. Deal with tangles first with a toothed-comb before you use a hairbrush. The toothed-comb is also perfect for parting hairs.
  • The Paddle Brush. The paddle brush is used when blow-drying to smoothen out hair tresses.
Beauty Tools
  • The Mirror. A handy mirror is great for checking your look from time to time with less hassle. Avoid the trouble of checking your brows with a static mirror with the flexibility of a handy one. Plus, you don't need to join the crowd in a busy comfort room just to get a glimpse of you.
  • The Nail File. File away rough skin and nail edges with a nail file for a cleaner finish. Avoid chipped nails by filing in one direction only.
  • The Tweezers. Choose a slanted edge for a precise chucking of unwanted hairs.
  • The Lash Curler. Prevent kinked lashes and opt out for a perfectly bended lash with a rubber-edged lash curler. To keep your lashes from breaking, make sure that you lash first before using a mascara. That also makes mascara application way easier.

Sterilized and Fluoridated Water - Best Types of Water for Babies

Safety is a serious concern for parents when it comes to babies' drinking water, especially those who rely primarily on formula milk for feeding. According to the World Health Organization (2002), around 1.6 million children under 5 years old die as a result of dehydration from diarrhea that is caused by a host of bacterial, viral, protozoal and parasitic organisms present in contaminated water. Leading infectious waterborne diseases include amoebiasis, cholera, cryptosporidiosis, E. coli, hepatitis A and E, rotavirus and typhoid. Bacteria and viruses that cause these diseases are transmitted via untreated drinking water, contaminated and/or uncooked foods, and unhygienic storage and preparation of foods and utensils. Common symptoms include abdominal discomfort or pain caused by bloating or the more severe internal bleeding, weight loss due to to loss of apetite and malfunctioning digestive system, fever due to lowered immunity and other complications, and dehydration caused by diarrhea. Additionally, chemicals in regular drinking water can also have serious health effects on infants and young children. Lead, from old lead pipes, can cause learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, kidney and nerve damage, and cancer. Arsenic, which comes from minerals and ores omiitted from mining and industrial plants, can cause cancer of the skin, lungs, urinary bladder and kidney. Benzene, which mostly comes from polluted air, can cause leukemia, and can damage the central nervous system. Lastly, nitrates and nitrites, from fertliziers and animal or human wastes, can cause respiratory damage, specifically the blue baby syndrome.

Why Infants Are At Risk for Water Contamination

Infants cannot fight off infections caused by waterborne diseases. This is because their immune system is not yet fully developed. Unlike adults who can tolerate common bacteria present in tap water, infants are not readily equipped to fend off a waterborne virus or bacteria.

Infants require more water than adults relative to their size. 75% of an infant's body content is water, compared to 50% to 60% in adults. And because of higher turnover rate of water and electrolytes due to constant urination, coupled with their relatively lower body weight, infants are more susceptible to dehydration than adults. Thus, severe diarrhea is not just harmful, but is already life-threatening to babies.

Infants are at the earliest stage of their development. Waterborne contamination can have serious long-term effects on the physical, behavioral and mental development of babies.

What the Experts Recommend

Leading world health authorities recommend using only sterilized water for infants. The World Health Organization, The American Academy of Pediatrics, and the US Food and Drug Administration strongly suggest one minute boiling of regular drinking water to free it from the effects of biological and chemical water contamination. Unlike filtration and distillation, only sterilization of water can kill all forms of bacterial, viral, protozoal and parasitic microorganisms. In order to keep sterlized water clean during cooling and transferring, all containers and utensils that come in contact with the water should be sterilized as well, but make sure that such containers and utensils are, in the first place, sterilizable. It is recommended that sterilized water should be given to infants at least up to 12 months.

Water Fluoridation, on the other hand, as endorsed by leading health authorities, such as the American Dental Association, the World Health Organization and US Surgeon General, "has been the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health." 0.3-0.6 ppm of fluoride in water (or 0.67-1.32 mg of sodium fluoride in food) significantly reduces plaque formation by 40-60% by strengthening the tooth enamel through sterilization. Because teeth development starts before the teeth actually appear, it is recommended that infants get the right amount of fluoride from 6 months onwards.

Common Concerns on Water Sterilization

Some parents think that exposing the baby to some bacteria can help build immune system. This is the philosophy behind vaccination. But vaccination only uses inactivated bacteria, which a baby's undeveloped immune system can already handle. Exposing your baby to live and active bacteria is therefore not worth the risk.

Some consumers also believe that natural mineral waters offer health benefits. While this is true for adults, the high mineral content typically present in such waters may not be suitable for infants as they can tax or overwork their kidneys. The World Health Organization adds that they are "unaware of any convincing evidence to support the beneficial effects of consuming such mineral waters."

Complementary Feeding: Guide to Feeding Babies

Breastmilk, or formula milk for some, is by far the most important food source for babies. Milk is the primary dietary cvomponent for babies from 0 to 6 months. However, as babies grow, their nutritional needs also grow. In order to meet these growing nutritional needs, parents are encouraged to complement breat or formula milk with solid foods.

Importance of Complementary Feeding: Meeting Baby's Higher Nutritional Needs

According to the Food Nutrition Research Institute or FNRI (2002), the Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intake or RENI per day for babies 0-6 months is 500 kcal, 9 g of protein and 0.38 mg of iron. However, babies 6-12 months need approximately 44% more calories, 56% more protein and 2500% (thats 25x) more iron. Specifically, starting 6 months onwards, babies need 720 kcal of energy, 14g of protein and 10 mg of iron in their diet every day!

Introducing Solid Fods: When to Start Complementary Feeding

It is advisable to start complementary feeding at 6 months when babies' nutritional needs are higher. This is also the time when babies are generally physically and developmentally ready to eat - they are able to control their head, they can sit with little or no support, and they start to show interest in food. (According to some research, introducing solids before this age is related to obesity and eating disorders in adults.)

Choosing the Right Complementary Food: Start Baby's Path to a Lifetime of Healthy Eating

On average, babies' stomach capacity is 1oz (or 2 tbsp) at birth, 6 oz (or 1 cup) at 6 months, and 8 oz (or 1 glass) at 1 year. By comparison, adults' stomach capacity is 32 oz (or 1 pitcher). Because babies' stomach capacity is only as small as a cup, it is very important to choose the right complementary foods for your baby.

Complementary foods should be nutrient- and energy-dense. Complete nutrition for babies should meet the earlier stated RENI per day, with sufficient carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. It is important to deliver all these essential nutrients in a small serving. At the same time, complementary foods should be gentle to babies' stomach. They should be easy to digest, and should not cause diarrhea or constipation.

Carbohydrate is important for babies' daily energy. Some examples of food rich with carbohydrate are bread, rice, noodles, potato and camote. Protein is important for the development of strong bones and immunity. Foods rich with protein are egg, fish, chicken, lean beef and pork, cheese, liver, monggo, beans and yoghurt. Fat is an important source of energy and vital for getting healthy skin. Food sources for fat are butter, vegetable oil, margarine and also meat. Lastly, vitamins and minerals are important for healthy growth and development. Vitamins and minerals can come from leafy vegetables (malunggay, broccoli, camote tops, kangkong, pechay, ampalaya leaves), non-leafy vegetables (squash, carrots, white squash, sayote), fruits (banana, papaya, apple, mango, orange, melon), and others (meat and iron-fortified cereals).

Sample Daily Menu for Babies: Complete Nutrition in Every Meal with Various Tastes and Textures
  • Breakfast: Breast/Formula Milk + 2 tablespoon cereals + 1/2 boiled egg yolk + 2 tablespoon papaya.
  • Morning Snack: Breast/Formula Milk + 1/2 sliced bread with thinly spread butter + 1/4 orange.
  • Lunch: Breast/Formula Milk + 1/2 cup rice + 1 tablespoon boiled chicken with 2 tablespoon squash + 1/4 medium-sized banana.
  • Afternoon Snack: Breast/Formula Milk + 1/4 sliced bread with grated cheese + 2 tablespoon apple.
  • Dinner: Breast/Formula Milk + 1/2 cup potato + 2 tablespoon carrots with 2 tablespoon fish + 2 tablespoon ripe mangoes.
How to Start Feeding Baby: Give Your Baby One Type of Food at a Time

Before you start anything, remember to practice good hygiene in preparing your baby's food. Don't forget to wash your hands and your baby's hands, and to use clean (preferably sterilized) utensils. Introduce one new food at a time for 3 days. This is to prevent babies from developing allergic reactions to different foods. Start with giving 1-2 tablespoon of iron-fortified cereals, rice, mashed meat and fish, and pureed fruits and vegetables. Don't worry if baby refuses a type of food! It takes 10-15 attempts before a type of food is accepted. After successful introduction of new foods, you may begin to combine different foods, preferably as suggested in the sample menu above.

Get Over Your Broken Heart - the Smart Girl's Guide to Surviving a Breakup

So you broke up. Before you even think about what to do next, where to go, or who to, umm, "hurt", know first the stages one goes through in a post-traumatic relationship. Understanding where you stand in can give you an idea of what to expect and how to prepare to keep your sanity from also, erm, "breaking".

First on the list: the constant questioning, "Why? Why? Why?"
Okay, so you can't think of any reason why he would dump you. You have fun together, you spend great time together, your family knows him well, his family knows you well, your friends and his friends vote for the both of you...in short, you are perfect for each other! But still, why? There could be a third party, but she doesn't add up at all! It's just impossible to beat the good ol' times you were together. So why, why, why? This is where it all starts. Even if your guy told you repeatedly, over and over again, why he dumped you, you just can't accept it. If, however, he didn't, of course you already knew, or you already have an idea of the reason or the possible reasons why he dumped you. And still! You can't accept it. You always ask yourself "why?" not because you don't know the answer, but because you just can't accept that he dumped you for a reason that you also cannot accept. It's like being used to the equation that 1+1=2, that when it becomes 1-1=0, you become hysterical. You bang your head many many times, and still, it's true. Until you begin to accept this, you move to stage 2.

The every hour, on-the-hour sobfest until your tear ducts run dry.
Crying...the symptom of weakness that goes straight from the infant stage. People cry not because they feel pain, or because they are hurt, or because they fail...People cry because they need help. It's a shout to someone or to somebody to comfort you, or give you what you need. The problem with being broken-hearted is that soothing the "crying" has a lot of requirements: You specifically need the same person who dumped you to comfort you and love you once again. This is stupid, but it is natural. And like what all babies have to go through, crying can lead to only two things - comfort from getting what you need, or comfort from realizing that you cannot get what you need. Until you acquire the latter, you move on to stage 3.

The urge to call him at three in the morning.
This is when you must have stopped the sobfest and realized that you're through with crying, so you've got a new plan to get him back to you. You try to reach for your phone and read through your treasured messages (from him) and decided to call him. You don't think about the time; you don't think about what he's probably doing; you don't think about what you're going to say; and you don't think about the possibility that you're just going to hurt yourself again with what you're about to do. You just want to call him. You want to talk to him. You want to tell him that you understand why he dumped you and that you realized that there was no point crying over him. You think that you've got over your broken relationship. Hell no. The urge to call him without even having an idea of "why" is a sure sign that you're not only convincing yourself that it's over, but that you also think that you can start all over again. No, it's not that easy. In fact, when you start to call him, and he answers the phone, you'll just gonna cry again, and perhaps even ask him to go back to you. This is like crying with some adult level of thinking. With crying, you're expecting the person to come to you. With calling, you're actually asking the person to come to you. Until you realize that he's not going anywhere near you, you move on to stage 4.

The urge to call him and say nothing. You just want to hear his voice.
So you finally accepted that he's not gonna come, whether you cry or call. But you still need to be comforted. You still want to convince yourself that he's there. You still want to hear his voice, as if he's near you, as if you're still together. So you still cannot accept that your relationship is through. It's not easy, I know. And I also know that his voice or just his face can calm you down. And slowly, the fact that your relationship has ended will finally sink in, and you move on to stage 5.

The Depression Diet where you can't eat anything, or you just want to eat!
It is quite common for depressed girls to lose appetite, but some also gain too much appetite. The key here is that your depression is costing you your health, and you feel helpless over it. You finally gave in. You have accepted that he dumped you for that reason, that he dumped you, that he's not gonna come back, and that your relationship is through. You have accepted all these things, but you still haven't gone over him and the fact that your relationship has ended. You accepted them as truth, as facts, so you become depressed. It's simple. You finally understood that you can't do anything about it anymore, and until you get over your depression, you move on to stage 6.

The urge to call him names.
This is when you muster up the courage and the energy you stored during the age of depression to finally be angry! You begin to think that he was unfair, that his reason or reasons are unreasonable, that he wasn't there when you needed him the most, that he didn't comfort you when you cried and almost hurt yourself because of him, that he hurt you when you loved him more than anyone else in the world. You think of hitting him hard on the face (or on the balls). You dream of setting his house or the third party's place on fire. You pray for his and her damnation. You might even attack him in school and at work and confront him for what he did to you. And still, you think about him. Even if you are full of anger, you still think of him. And this stage is very complicated, because it's like stage 2 (crying) in disguise. All of us have learned during childhood that our parents get what they want from us whenever they punish us. We become obedient because we are afraid to get beaten or scolded. This is the same unconscious tactic you use when you're in this stage. You are actually going mad over him because you unconsciously think that punishing him would bring him back to you. After all, there was a time in your relationship when he did his very best to calm you when you're furious over him. This is like forgetting what you have already accepted in the depression stage, because you've got a hint of hope. And until it sinks in to you again that getting mad is not gonna work, you move on to stage 7.

The zero-energy days (or weeks, or months) when you just want to stay in bed and listen to senti music.
You did everything that you can to get him back. You asked yourself "why?", you cried, you called, you got angry, and still, he's nowhere near you. You're exhausted, you're tired, and you just want to remember the good ol' days when you were together...This is when you finally realize that your relationship has ended, and that your placing those memories into a file that's named "past". You're reminiscing, and you're lamenting about the loss. And when you finally stopped re-playing those taped memories over and over into your head, you move on to stage 8.

The absolute loss of self-esteem when you begin to think that he stopped loving you, or cheated on you, or changed his mind about being with you, because you put on some weight, acquired wrinkles, lost your sense of humor, or are ugly.
This is the stage when you transfer your attention from him and your past relationship to you. You begin to blame yourself for what happened. You start to get angry with yourself. And you start to hurt yourself. Don't! Sure, you could be the reason why he dumped you, but you were also the reason why he loved you in the first place, and you will also be the reason why another guy would bring you love once again.

Get the Celebrity Look - 10 Ways to Look like a Holywood Celebrity

You might want to work for Holywood, but that could be impossible, so you just want to steal their looks and live your celeb life with simple makeups and 'dos. Here's a no-fuss list of how to look like your favorite celebrities.
  1. Black Magic: Black-lined eyes look glamorous on-stage and off-cam. Keep the line near your lashes with a liner brush, and put on a nude or a peach lippie to go with the look. You don't want to look like a witch; you want to look like a celebrity, so never overdo this with dark lips.
  2. Red Alert: Bright red lips draw attention, and they can also make your pearls look whiter than normal. Try adding volume and shine to your lips with a light gloss, and don't ever forget to smile!
  3. Fuss-free Locks: Even celebrities have a bad hair day, but they always look cool when they do. Go for a natural look with a loose updo. Finger-comb your hair and match your relaxed hair with a sophisticated getup (you don't want to look like you've just rolled out of bed...sigh).
  4. Pretty Pastel: Use pastel colors for a younger and more delicate look. But don't overdo. Use a beige eye shadow and keep the rest of the face pale if you're using pink blush and lippie.
  5. Blushing Beauty: Look strikingly fresh with a blush. Stroke downwards to reduce pore. And never enhance the cheekbone if you have a round face.
  6. Barely There: Glow naturally without make-up. Simply apply a bronzer to reduce the shine, and a moisturizer with SPF to maintain smoothness.
  7. Fringe Benefits: Enhance your cheekbones with a straight bangs (right on top of your eyes), and look futuristic. Slide those bangs to the side when they grow long, but you can also trim them down to keep the shape.
  8. Central Part: Change your look instantly by changing the way your hair is parted. Try for a central divide with a fine-toothed comb when your hair is wet, then air-dry.
  9. Short Cut: Cut that hair short, but don't overdo with a tomboyish cut. Ask for layers, and always air dry. Blow drying don't look cool with short hairs.
  10. Head Gear: Look hippie with a bandana. Use old scarves for a more vintage feel. Let your hair fall down naturally to avoid looking too primped.

How Celebrities Changed for the Better

Celebrities reach the headlines in today's news only for two reasons - they had a good image to brag about, or they had a bad image reported by an unwitting witness and worth dumping away. Take the cases of Paris Hilton, Kate Moss, Christina Aguillera, Avril Lavigne and Angelina Jolie, and how they got over their past setbacks and bounced back for the better.

The Hardworking Heiress
Paris Hilton is not just the heiress to the Hilton hotels fortune, but she was also a victim of a sex scandal videotaped by her ex-boyfriend. Aside from this, people branded her as someone who "doesn't work for a living" and who "just gets her money from her family." In an interview with CNN's Larry King, she bragged, "...a lot of people don't know I'm a businesswoman, and I run several businesses...I've been earning on my own, by myself...I work very hard...

The Model Addict
Kate Moss was a buzzing supermodel when she got caught in a drug scandal in September 2005. Her million-dollar endorsements withdrew their contracts, and her daughter was almost taken away from her. But she fought to retain her rights as the mother. She apologized, "I take full responsibility for my actions. I also accept that there are various personal issues that I need to address and have started taking the difficult, yet necessary, steps to resolve them." She went into rehab, revamped and reinvented herself. From top model to a fashion designer, she launched her first collection for UK label Topshop last May 2007. She did not give up; she fought addiction; and she won! As Topshop owner Sir Philip Green said, this could be "the next stage of her life."

The Humanitarian Rebel
Angelina Jolie was known as the rebellious Holywood daughter. Born of famous parents, she suffered from criticisms and expectations from them, until she finally denounced her own childhood. She had eating disorders, mutilated herself, and engaged in scandalous relationships before. Angelina admits, "I've been self-destructive my whole life and had times when I wasn't healthy." But all of these were forgotten until she decided to become a parent for her first adopted son, Maddox. Angelina catches up: "For me, becoming a parent changed everything. My priorities straightened out. My life is all different. I feel I'm finally living the life I should be living." Today, Angelina is not only known as an A-list movie star, or as the partner of hottie Brad Pitt, but also as an humanitarian ambassador to the UN.

The Growing Diva
Christina Aguillera, pop artist turned dirty siren, turned pin-up girl, with blond, curls and red lips, reminiscent of the 30s and 40s, follows Madonna's steps of constantly reinventing herself. She shares to OK! magazine, "You know, I do get bored easily! I think that life is all about changing and trying to continue your growth as a person. If I wasn't changing and evolving, then I wouldn't think that I'd be growing personally at all."

The Glamorous Rocker
Avril Lavigne embraces her womanhood when she sported a Vera Wang wedding gown last 2006 to finally get married! Although the relationship didn't work so well, her appreciation of her feminine side showed when she replaced her punk-rock look - the military boots, fatigue-pants and heavy-metal blings - with her laid-down blonde hair and spontaneous designer gown. Avril explains, "I was a tomboy before. Now, I'm more girlie. When I started on the scene, I was straight out of high school and a skater. Now I'm 23, and I'm a woman. People do change their hairstyles! Girls tend to wear a little more makeup and high heels when they get older so it's a natural process. I want the rock look but I also want to be a little more feminine, so I think I've got a rock-glam thing going on." Avril Lavigne may not like beauty, but everyone knows that she's got the right to be pretty.

How to Live like a Celebrity

Want to know how celebrities manage to become so popular and seem so perfect? Here's a list of how the pros coach them to be one, and learn to live like a celebrity, one step at a time.

Tailor-fit your clothes. Jay Manuel, stylist and host of Style Her Famous, shares: "The key to looking as glam as a celeb is getting the fit of your clothes just right. Spend $20 on a dress from H&M, and $20 on alterations from your local tailor. Ask him to hem the dress to the right length for your height and to bring up the sleeves so they fall perfectly on your arms. The result? It'll look like you're wearing a $400 dress!"

Customize your meal. Harley Pasternak, celebrity nutritionist and personal trainer, and who's worked with Sophia Bush, Alicia Keys and Eva Mendes, shares: "I always tell clients to start meals with a glass of water. It hydrates you and fills you up so you're less likely to eat too much. Also, ask the waiter to take away the bread so you don't have to resist temptation. And don't be afraid to customize your order. Ask for meats grilled, not pan-fried, and get sauces on the side so you'll use less."

Trust your gut-feeling. Terry Iacuzzo, celebrity psychic adviser, who keeps her A-list client's identities a secret, and author of Small Mediums at Large, shares: "To help clients hone their intuition, I tell them to pay attention to their first impressions of people. Your sixth sense can tell you a lot about someone. But don't rewrite your impression to sit your needs - stick to that initial gut feeling you had. Once you do it regularly, your intuition will get sharper, and you'll make better decisions."

Practice being discreet. Scott Appel, publicist and founder of Scott Appel Public Relations, and who's worked with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ashley Tisdale, shares: "I advise my clients to hiold their head high no matter what. If someone syas something judgmental about you, the best response is, 'You don't know the whole story.' Just remeber to be discreet - today, anything you say or do could be captured by someone's cell phone and end up on YouTube the next morning!"

Know your angles. George Holz, celebrity photographer who's shot stars like Lauren Conrad, Hilary Duff and JoJo, shares: "Try various poses and expressions in the mirror to see which look best. Then have a friend take photos of you with a digital camera. Figure out what you love about your favorite shots and copy those poses next time you're in front of the lens. One great tip is to laugh a little bit when posing - it'll make your smile more radiant."

Do your research. Chuck James, senior talent agent at the Gersh Agency in LA, and who's worked with Elisha Cuthbert and Mena Suvari, shares: "The key to acing a job interview or audition is to learn everything you can about the company and the person you're meeting with first. In the interview, mention what appeals to you about the job. If you're nervous, break the ice by saying so - admitting it and making light of it with a big smile will help get people on your side."

Decorate your room. Todd Oldham, interior designer to stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Sedaris, shares: "The best way to decorate a room to reflect who you are is to make a statement. Like, paint one wall a bold color - and don't be afraid to repaint whenever you need a change. I tell clients that the way to make any room look better is to get rid of clutter. Go through your stuff and pick out what you want on display. Store, toss or donate the rest."

Care for your skin. Kate Somerville, celebrity skin care guru, who's worked with Jessica Alba, Kerry Washington and Kristen Bell, shares: I have clients start exfoliating their face two weeks before a big event to lift away dead skin. Do it every other day with a face wash containing round beads or fruit enzymes. If you feel a zit coming on, dry it out by spot-treating it with a bacteria-killing product with sulfur."

How to Tell If Your Friend is SICK or Just Plain SKINNY

It's not easy to spot a sick or a skinny friend, but being a friend means being concerned over the health of your friend (or friends). Check out these telling signs of sick or just plain skinny friend:

A sick friend...
  1. pretends to eat. Your friend may deceive you as if she's eating more than she actually does when she scatters her food around the plate (to make it look like the food has miraculously disappeared), when she cuts her food into tiny bits so that a piece may look like more than it actually is, and when she chews her food for a very, very looong time as if she's been chewing the same piece the entire time she spent in front of the table. When your friend pretends to eat, she does not want anyone to notice that she's starving herself too much, and in an unhealthy way.
  2. exercises too much. Your friend may be eating a lot, but if she's excercising too much, it means that she wants to get rid of all the calories she takes in. She could be religiously working out everyday for more than an hour (with no apparent reason), and she often gets anxious and frustrated (or even scared) when she misses just a single day.
  3. looks puffed up and pale. Throwing up is one common way of getting rid of the food eaten. Your friend might appear overwhelmingly stuffed with food whenever you're together (and when she's outside), but whenever she's alone, she could be forcing herself to throw up all the food she's eaten. Vomitting makes the throat glands swell, making her more puffed than usual. And if she's not digesting enough food, she would look dull and pale, a sure sign that she's not getting the nutrients that she need.
  4. is skin and bones. We build muscles by the food we eat, specifically food rich in protein. If your friend has been losing too much weight - a dress size - in less than a month, she could be not eating enough protein to build muscles.
  5. isolates herself. Your friend may try to avoid you and her other friends if she's too focused with her exercise routine, or just because your friendship spells food - that is, when you hang out at the mall, or just at school munching on your favorite sweets and junks.
A skinny friend...
  1. works out regularly. It isn't sudden, and you've known her to be like so even before, or she's not overdoing it. Exercising for an hour or less five to six times a week is considered healthy exercise.
  2. eats like everyone else, or even more. She's eating 3 square meals a day, she's not avoiding her friends when they invite her to eat lunch or dinner with them, and she's eating even more than average because she needs the extra energy to keep up with her metablic rate.
  3. has always been thin. Her childhood photos show it, her siblings show it, and her parents (or just one of them) show it too. It's probably in her genetic makeup, and you've known her to be skinny even before, so what's there to question?

How to Use Your Menstrual Cycle to Your Advantage

Hormonal fluctuations associated with your menstrual cycle affect the way you feel, making you more sad or happy in some days, more or less energetic in other days. You can use your menstrual cycle to your advantage if you know what to do when. Plan your activities and put them in sync with your hormonal changes.

Week 1: Red Alert!
You have your period and you feel slow and tired. Low levels of estrogen and testosterone drain your energy, making you more tired than usual. Because you're not at your peak, put off making decisions for next week, and do not take unnecesaary risks. Also, try to get more frequent naps to help you get energized.

Week 2: Wonder Woman!
You have lots of energy, you feel confident, you think much faster, and your memory is at its sharpest. These are because your estrogen and testosterone levels are at their highest. Maximize this week by taking tests, trying out new sports, and going out with friends. Try not to engage with slow-moving activities as they will get you bored easily.

Week 3: Decision-making.
A surge of progesterone after ovulation makes you more cautious and self-protective. You also feel slow-moving and mellow. Because you're not prone to taking risks, this is the time when you should be thinking about future activities and decision-making. Meditation, reading books and listening to slow music go with your flow, helping you ease your mind off clutter, and making you more relaxed, thus giving you the necessary atmosphere to think more about important things. If week 2 is about doing, week 3 is about thinking.

Week 4: Artistic and Creative.
Low levels of testosterone pushes you to use the right side of your brain more than usual, making you more intuitive, creative and artistic. Estrogen and progesterone are also at their lowest point, causing mood swings. Give in. Connect with creative people. Engage in expressive activities. And let your intuition flow.

The key to maximizing your mood is giving in with your hormonal directives. Your hormones basically tell you which side of you is at their best. Instead of fighting this and end up less productive, grab these opportunities to be the best that your body allows you to be.

Tips for Shopping at Zara, People Are People, Bayo and Ilaya

Shopping is all about looking for that piece that truly satisfies your need and want. One could run through an entire mall, or even venture from malls to malls, but still cannot find that one piece that says it all. Shopping means striking a balance between quality and cost-control. To help you get the most of your shopping spree at these Holywood-like stores, here are some tips for shopping at Zara, People are People, Bayo and Ilaya.

Shopping Tips for Zara
  1. Explore. Zara stores are divided into TRF, women's, men's and kids' sections for easier navigation. Head towards the TRF and women's section first, mix and match some pieces you find in there, then pick up some cool things from the men's and kids' section to add to your wardrobe. Of course you're not going to find clothings that you can wear from the men's and kids' sections, but that hip cap, and that funky bracelet, might be just what you need to spice up your look.
  2. Blend. Zara apparels are not only divided into sections, they are also arranged according to color. Whenever you approach a section, head straight to the colors that match your skin tone. The time it'll take you to try clothes that don't blend well could be used instead for trying out pieces that you would enjoy.
  3. Ask. Zara grabbers like to try out all pieces, causing worn-out, stained and damaged clothings. Showcased pieces are expected to get damaged as more and more customers try them on. Always ask the store-keeper for a new stock to make sure that you get your choices looking at their best.
Shopping Tips for People are People
  1. Demand. Bags at People are People look sophisticated, but they sometimes don't match with your style and your look, just because they're in a different color. At People are People, bags on display are in generic colors. Always ask the sales lady for other shades that could go with the style you're aiming for.
  2. Hunt. Tees at People are People oftentimes differ only in their graphic designs, making each tee unique. It could take forever to decide what design best expresses your personality, but don't tire! It'll definitely be worthwhile to actually browse through the entire tee section to choose the best design that matches your style. Just make the hunting more systematic, as when you judge the tees one by one, against each other as you go through the line, so that you'll end up with just one tee after you finish the entire collection.
  3. Know yourself. People are People offers a wide array of differring cuts and shapes, so it's doubtful not to get overwhelmed. You could narrow down your selection by mastering the art of self-knowing. Before you enter the store, make sure you know what shape and cut suits your frame. Not only will you cut the time and the energy to search for that best fit, you also reduce the likelihood that you'll pay for a piece that you'll later regret.
Shopping Tips for Bayo
  1. Layer. Bayo offers a wide range of preppy tops. But too much preppiness might make things a little boring for you. Spice up the preppy look by choosing two unique tops that could go well with each other. For example, wear a collared shirt with puff-up sleeves beneath a cover-up, or a tube underneath a shoulder-bare half-shirt.
  2. Mix mix mix. Stripes, dots, silk, denim and cotton can all work together if you just know which ones to pick. Don't be afraid to mix and match. Bayo pieces are made to look good with each other. You just have to know how to mix them up into one outfit.
  3. Trademark. Pair trademark Bayo colors (such as turquoise and tangerine orange) with black and white. Black and white are the ultimate neutral colors (i.e., they perfectly complement any other colors you choose). After all, it's not harmful to let the public know you're wearing Bayo.
Shopping Tips for Ilaya
  1. Bloom. The good thing about Ilaya pieces is that they can make you look and think like a flower. Make sure you don't get out of the store without seeing through Ilaya's generous selection of psychedelic floral prints.
  2. Snap. Some items at Ilaya come in limited stock only. So make your reservations early while you think about which pieces to purchase.
  3. Cover up. From blooming up to getting more reserved and subdued...Hide yourself with style. Snatch a glimpse from Ilaya's great collection of boleros and jackets. The cuts and shapes are totally smart and unique. Definitely muts-haves.
So there. Make visiting these stores a breeze. Knowing how to shop for these stores save you more time to check how those clothes can make you look fab.

How to Get that Perfect-Looking Fair Skin

There are many products out in the market that promise "skin whitening", but most, if not all, of them fail to address other factors that are important in having a perfect-looking fair skin. This is because a perfect-looking fair skin is not only about "whitened skin"; it's about having smooth and clear skin, free of dark spots and acne battle scars, strong enough to withstand UV rays, with an even tone that radiates a healthy glow.

Again, what are those factors that make up a perfect-looking fair skin?
  • Fairness, brings out the natural whiteness of skin
  • Smoothness, provides sufficient moisture for the skin
  • Clearness, freedom from dark spots and acne scars
  • Evenness, blends skin tone
  • Strength, repels and fights damage caused by UV rays
  • Glow, powers up to a healthy radiating skin
Is it possible to achieve a perfect-looking fair skin? Take the case of Isabelle Diaz-Daza.

Isabelle is not your ordinary college gal. When at school, she juggles her time between academic work and sports, being a varsity player of her school's soccer team. And outside, a stunning model. In order to bring out her perfect-looking fair skin whether in school or at work, she uses a product that addresses all her needs - a product suitable for her young skin, a product capable of protecting her skin from UV rays while fulfulling her passion for outside sports, and a product that makes her look and feel glamorous about herself while at the runway.

Olay White Radiance can help you achieve that perfect-looking fair skin.

Olay White Radiance contains SPF24 that protects the skin against UVA and UVB, two of the most damaging rays coming from the sun. It contains a powerful skin-lightening ingredient called Niacinamine that brings out the natural fairness of the skin, while lightening dark spots, minimizing acne scars, and even-ing out skin tone. A combination of antioxidants - vitamin E and pro-vitamin B5 - present in the formulation can give you the healthy radiant glow that you're aiming for. Natural emollients also found in the product improve skin texture, giving your skin a smooth and supple finish.

You don't have to be a soccer player and a model like Isabelle to find satisfaction in this product, because we all get our fair share of exposure to harmful elements that damage the natural beauty of our skin. UV rays, for instance, forces the skin to produce a darkening pigment called melanin. A combination of UV rays and hormonal imbalance cause dull and uneven skin tone. Dark spots form from cigarette smoke and smog. And those memorable adolescent breakouts must have left scars and dents on your face. Everyone wants a perfect-looking fair skin, not because of vanity. Having a perfect-looking fair skin is all about looking good and feeling confident with your own skin.
